Supply Chain 101

I'm not sure about you, but I have been trying to watch the news less, which has led me to binge read the thousands of articles on how COVID-19 has been affecting supply chains worldwide.

I often find that the average person has no idea how a garment is made and is very disconnected from the supply chain in general, so hearing these headlines probably means jack to you. But, I think it's important we all know HOW IT'S MADE! So, I'm going to give you a very simplified version of how it works.

18% of carbon emissions come from fiber production, 16% from yarn production and 39% coming from consumer use (washing, drying, and disposing of them). However, there are a few other steps in the supply chain that will take you from cotton to your favorite pair of jeans. Here they are:

1. Cultivating Raw Materials 2. Processing Raw Materials into Yarn 3. Dyeing the Yarn 4. Weaving 5. Design & Pattern Drafting 6. Cut & Sew 7. Pre-Wash / Distressing 8. Pressed & Boxed 9. Product is Shipped 10. Consumers Buy 11. Clothing Collection 12. Recycling

As you can see, there are many steps that go into making your jeans and we must remember that there are human beings managing every process in this supply chain.

Denim's environmental scope is actually outstanding. It touches agriculture, animal agriculture, petroleum, forestry, mining, construction, shipping, and manufacturing. So pretty much touching on every industry at different stages in the supply chain.

So if denim can demonstrate a responsible supply chain, all industries can. Let's reconnect with our clothes and appreciate all the work that goes into them.

Next week is FASHION REVOLUTION week! So, stay diligent friends, and catch me over on Instagram for your daily dose of denim and sustainability.
