Second-hand clothes pose a major challenge for Kenya’s textile and fashion sector 🛍️

Also known as Mitumbas, these markets employ 2 million workers in Kenya, hindering local production, job stability, and a homegrown fashion sector.

With my friend & artist @kajosehjoh, I visited two markets, including Gikomba Market, in one of Nairobi's poorest and most dangerous areas. It's known for its unpredictable nature, with buyers gambling on bales without knowing exactly what they’ll find.

While second-hand stalls are a major part of Kenya’s circular economy, the organisations that send the clothes there need to provide more financial support.

Thankfully, initiatives like @maishabynisria, a fashion non-profit that welcomed us into its design studio, are leading the way. They repurpose local materials into contemporary fashion pieces and are part of Nisira, an NGO supporting marginalised communities.

Upcycling in Kenya’s sustainable fashion industry ♻️

During my time in Kenya, I got to see the growing movement of designers and organisations committed to growing a strong upcycling industry.

In these photos, you can see some of the examples of upcycling around the country, such as sails made of old rice bags or bottles combined with cement to create beautiful, insulated walls.

I met with @sokokenya , an ethical clothing manufacturer that empowers local communities with fair wages, medical care, and flexible work. Through the Kujuwa Initiative, they train and support young people, upcycle factory scraps into sanitary pads for schools and provide education on female health.
Upcycling projects can reduce waste, create jobs, and empower local communities!

The Inner Development Goals (IDGs) outline the skills and mindset shifts we need to create a more sustainable and equitable world. With five key areas—Being, Thinking, Relating, Collaborating, and Acting—the IDGs guide us in aligning inner growth with systemic change.
